Electric cars are a true technological revolution. In addition to not polluting the atmosphere with polluting gases, they are cheaper to maintain, make practically no noise and achieve more efficient energy consumption. But they are not perfect: on average, a full charge of your batteries takes between 5 and 8 hours.
But this could also be resolved in the short term. The Israeli company StoreDot designed the first battery for electric vehicles that can be charged in just 5 minutes, a step towards a replenishment as fast as when you wait in front of the pump.
Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which are used by most electronic devices, these do not use graphiteas when they charge too fast, they can turn to metal and short-circuit the battery.
This new battery replaces the graphite with germanium-based semiconductor particles, which is soluble in water and easier to handle in a factory.
They will be manufactured by Eve Energy in China, who for years has developed batteries of this type for mobiles, drones and scooters with amazing results.
As a test, 1,000 of these super batteries will be produced, the main objective of which will be to show this new technology to various manufacturers in the market.
StoreDot batteries solve a problem in the automotive industry.
So far, StoreDot has raised about $ 130 million for development at scale, with investors such as Daimler, BP, Samsung, TDK, among others.
And although these batteries can be fully charged in five minutes, to be able to translate this idea in a massive way would require much higher power chargers than those currently used.
With the charging infrastructure available today, StoreDot aims, by 2025, offer about 160 kilometers of cargo to a car battery in five minutes.
The durability of StoreDot batteries is similar to current ones, maintaining 80% of original capacity after 1,000 charge cycles. On a 500 km battery, that implies that, after 500,000 km, the car will have a range of 400 km.
The company is also aware that one of the main concerns of consumers, when opting for an electric car, is not only the price or the range, but the charging time. Something that could soon be resolved.
“Either you are afraid of getting stuck on the freeway or having to sit in a charging station for two hours. But if the driver’s experience is exactly like refueling a car with gasoline, anxiety disappears “, according to statements by Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot.
Many wonder what the degradation related to the use of fast charging will be like, something that must also be properly evaluated.
According to StoreDot, the product does not suffer from conventional battery life, swelling, and safety issues during an ultra-fast recharge like this.
Although it is not as simple as they say. Since to achieve this acceleration in the load they have introduced significant changes in the design of the cells and the materials chosen for some components.
