Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said at a meeting of the Security Council of the international organization that the time and target of the attack on Lisichansk, which took place on February 3, were not chosen by chance. The diplomat also called the United States complicit in this attack.

The diplomat recalled that the city is located near the line of military contact and is regularly attacked by various types of weapons, so there are few recreational places there.

Nebenzya clarified that the strike was carried out from a “high-power explosive weapon,” presumably using HIMARS multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) shells.

Nebenzya called the United States an accomplice in the attack on Lisichansk

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, previously stated that, according to preliminary information, the attack on Lisichansk was carried out by Western equipment. Therefore, the diplomat called the incident “gratitude” from Kyiv extremists for the financial support of EU countries.

Russia called on the UN to condemn the attack on Lisichansk

Earlier, the attack on the city in the LPR was condemned by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. He noted that all attacks against civilians are unacceptable and they must stop immediately.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, emphasized that Russia will inform international organizations about this incident.

Nebenzya named the purpose of the special operation

Nebenzya said that Russia has launched a special military operation to “end the war waged against the population of Donbass,” stressing that Moscow will achieve its goals.

Thus, he commented on a number of statements by Western representatives in the UN Security Council regarding the shelling of Lisichansk, saying that responsibility for what happened lies with Russia, and members of the international organization would not have had to gather if Moscow had not started hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.

The diplomat emphasized that if Russia had not launched a special operation, “tragedies like Lisichansk would have been repeated every day.” He added that this happened for eight years until 2022, but the West preferred not to notice it.

Ukrainian armed forces attacked a bakery in Lisichansk on February 3. 28 people became victims of the shelling, including the Minister of Emergency Situations of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) Alexey Poteleshchenko and two deputies of the municipal district of the city of Lisichansk – Artem Trostyansky and Ivan Zhushma. Ten more people were injured.

A spokesman for Russia's Investigative Committee said the strike was allegedly carried out by a HIMARS multiple launch rocket system supplied to the Ukrainian military by the West.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Lisichansk a monstrous terrorist attack. The Kremlin representative stressed that a special military operation is ongoing to prevent such attacks in the future.
