Like so many new parents grappling with the difficulties of having their first child, an English couple asked the mother of the mother who had just given birth for help. The couple, also struggling with economic difficulties, turned to their maternal grandmother who replied: “I accept, but you have to pay me 16 pounds an hour plus extras”.
Both the woman and her husband have a peaceful life but are still struggling financially with the costs of the newborn, so much so that they ask the maternal grandmother for help. However, the woman’s mother not only asked for a high amount to be a family member, but she also demanded extras. The daughter and parent explained: “She said she will charge me £16 for every hour she takes care of the baby, plus tax if we are late for ‘picking up’ the baby. We have to provide her with a car seat, a stroller, bottles, and everything we have at home to take care of the baby in her home ”.
The mother went on to say that she is already struggling with the mortgage and fears that this hourly rate will only worsen the family’s financial situation: “I’m thinking of enrolling my son in daycare. The cost will be lower overall and he will be a little closer to our home”.
The father explains that: “Due to our job, we cannot work from home, so we are in desperate need of assistance. Everyone else in our family works full time, so they can’t help us.”
