Finnish authorities will consider the possibility of expropriating real estate of Russians
The Finnish authorities will consider the possibility of retroactively expropriating real estate owned by Russians. In a European country, they believe that the presence of objects with foreign owners threatens national security, writes Bloomberg.
We are talking about strengthening measures to eliminate potential risks associated with real estate owned by Russians and other foreigners, which is located next to critical infrastructure. “Common sense dictates that if we see a real threat to national security, we should be able to act,” said Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
According to him, the country’s authorities have already carried out a complete mapping of the Russians’ possessions. Orpo explained that it is too early to say whether the country will be able to expropriate property retroactively. “This is a very complex legal issue and therefore we need to carefully consider how to proceed,” he said.
Earlier, a working group of the Finnish Ministry of Defense decided that Russian citizens should be prohibited from buying housing in the country. The department clarified that permission to purchase real estate will not be issued to a person “whose country of citizenship the European Union has recognized as having violated the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of another country.”
