Ajax qualified with a perfect score in the group stage for the eighth finals of the Champions League. Who can they meet there and who can’t anyway? What are the scenarios? For the draw for next Monday, we’ll already have a list. The possible opponents of the other Dutch teams are also known.
Six victories in a row for Ajax, what an achievement! After the victory over Sporting CP, the team from Amsterdam ensured the perfect series in the Champions League. With Bayern Munich also winning tonight, there are three clubs with Liverpool that are wintering with that feat. And Ajax will not be able to meet those clubs in the draw – next Monday in Nyon, Switzerland.
It was already known that as group winner in the Champions League, Ajax will soon encounter a number two from another group.
What do we know now?
Ajax will not meet Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United, Juventus and Lille in the eighth finals. Just like Ajax, this seven has won their group. The team from Amsterdam can also no longer draw lots in the next round against Sporting Portugal, which came second in Ajax’s group. So there are seven clubs left.
Who could that be?
• Paris Saint-Germain (number two in Group A)
• Atlético Madrid (number two in Group B)
• Inter (number two in Group D)
• Benfica (number two in Group E)
• Villarreal (number two in Group F)
• RB Salzburg (number two in Group G)
• Chelsea (number two in Group H)
What dates should we put in our diaries?
That’s just four right now. Do not plan visits for the eighth finals of the Champions League on Tuesday 8, Wednesday 9, Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 March 2022. After the draw on Monday, you can cross out two.
What about the Conference League?
Feyenoord and AZ reached the next round of the Conference League as group winners and therefore do not have to take action in the first round after the turn of the year. In the interim round, the numbers two first face the numbers three from the Europa League. This means that the numbers two from the Conference League (see first row below) are linked to the losers of the Europa League (see second row). For Vitesse, of course, it remains to be seen whether they will make it. They depend on the result of Tottenham Hotspur for that.
• Maccabi Tel Aviv
• Randers FC
• FK Bodø/Glimt
• FK Partizan
• Qarabag FK
• PAOK
• Slavia Prague
• Vitesse/Tottenham Hotspur
• Fenerbahce
• Leicester City
• Sparta Prague
• PSV
• FC Midtjylland
• Celtic
• Rapid Vienna
• Olympique Marseille
The eight group winners of the Conference League (LASK Linz, AZ, AS Roma, KAA Gent, FC Basel, FC Copenhagen, Feyenoord and Stade Rennais) only come into action in the next round. They will be linked to the winners of the clashes between the above teams.
