Parral, Chih.- Despite the wave of violence unleashed last week and the almost total absence of students at the school in El Valle de Allende, the regional coordinator of Education, Jorge Baca, assured that classes were not suspended and the presence of teachers in the classrooms was mandatory. Given this situation, teachers who travel daily to that community demanded support from the Ministry of Education.
“I don’t know why you feel targeted,” the official told the teachers who went to ask the education coordinator for support to consider that if they missed classes last week it was to protect their safety, after the shootings that occurred on the Parral-Jiménez highway.
The teachers, headed by a teacher named Abril Delgadillo, requested the implementation of a security protocol, since their lives are at risk and, in addition to the persistent fear, they have to deal with sanctions from the Ministry of Education for missing classes.
Jorge Baca invited the affected teachers who travel daily from Parral to El Valle to request a transfer to Parral, but he said that these processes are not decided by them but by Usicam, a situation that is beyond the control of the educational authorities.
Last week, after the shootout on Monday that left at least 9 dead on the Parral-Jiménez highway, schools remained empty for at least 3 days in the Allende Valley and nearby towns. The City Council of this town even called for a curfew, a situation that apparently the regional coordinator of Education did not comply with, assuring that there was no suspension of classes.
Foreign teachers demanded support from state educational authorities due to Jorge Baca’s stance in this area of the state.
