Dramatic ending for Peugeot
The first race of the season in Losail, home of the 1812 km of Qatar, was incredible, especially for what happened at the end. In addition to a technical problem that forced Jenson Button's Porsche #38 to return to the pits while the latter was in third position, during the penultimate lap the Peugeot #93 by Jean-Eric Vergne (shared with Nico Mueller and Mikkel Jensen) remained running out of fuel.
The disqualification was made official
The Frenchman, who until a few moments before was anticipating second place, managed to start the race electric motor without returning to the pitscrossing the finish line at 7th place. Furthermore, a few meters after the checkered flag, Vergne he couldn't even reach parc fermé, stopping disconsolately on the straight. However, for these two reasons, the Race Direction decided for the disqualification of the 9X8, with seventh position thus passing to Nielsen's Ferrari #50.
Below, the complete explanation regarding the exclusion of #93 from the ranking:
“The competitor has committed an infringement of the technical regulations (art. 5.3.2 of the LMH technical regulations) by not returning to the pits after [aver impiegato solo l’MGU-K per muoversi]. Due to this violation, and the competitor's choice not to comply with this technical regulation hoping to be classified, car 93 was able to cross the finish line before finally stopping on the straight, unable to re-enter parc fermé. However, an entrant cannot obtain the benefit of any infringement committed in relation to the relevant regulation. Therefore, the stewards ruled that the fact that car 93 crossed the finish line cannot be taken into account with regards to the sporting regulations. Furthermore, car 93 was unable to re-enter parc fermé under the conditions established in articles 15.1.1 and 15.1.3 of the 2024 FIA WEC Sporting regulations. Consequently, the stewards decided for these two reasons, combined and separate, to impose the disqualification of the 93″ car.
