Santander Women NOW
The president and co-founder of the Born This Way Foundation, Cynthia Germanotta, together with her daughter Lady Gaga, highlighted the importance of mental health at Santander WomenNOW
In recent years it has gained an important and necessary boost in society. It was as a result of the pandemic, with millions of people locked up at home, that one of the problems that society has to face was put on the table. It is none other than mental health. A medical specialty that was forgotten in a time but that, as Cynthia Germanotta assured, can cause serious problems. To the point that a good approach can help save “many lives”, especially young people. This was stated by the president and co-founder of the Born This Way Foundation together with her daughter Lady Gaga during her presentation at Santander WomenNOW, highlighting how kindness can help people with mental health problems to solve problems or feel better .
His daughter, Lady Gaga, was a victim of bullying before she became the famous singer she is now. “Her mental health issues affected her a lot and this helped her understand that she had to share her story with other people,” Germanotta confesses.
That is why they started the foundation. Talking with young people about the relationship between kindness and mental health was the objective with which they launched the project, seeing that people with mental problems were excluded despite great potential. They did so after seeing how the message of Lady Gaga, who suffered bullying during her childhood, and told her story, reached people who were going through a difficult situation at the time and used Lady Gaga’s model as an example to get ahead.
But why with young people? For the president of the association, 50% of mental health illnesses develop at the age of 40, so they saw the importance of bringing kindness to young people since “it saves many lives.” And it is that in her opinion, as she has told her in her appearance during Santander WomenNOW, “if we do not include kindness in mental health, we are not going to move forward.”
And during the pandemic, kindness has been a faithful ally for many young people. According to a study they conducted, 73% of them said that receiving kindness was the only way they saw to keep going during the most difficult moments of the health crisis. “When they had a problem, having someone who believed in them and encouraged them can save lives.” And it is that, when Lady Gaga suffered harassment, her mother recounted, she did not realize that what she had to do was empower her daughter so that she was the one who could deal with the problem. But treating it, she assures her, is essential since the harassment has affected, she said, her daughter “throughout her career.”
Even so, he criticized that there are people who think at some point that bullying is justified, but “devaluing it and harassing another human being is wrong.” Likewise, he lamented that there are many young people who do not want to talk to adults because they fear that they will be judged. For this reason, he sees the importance of creating communities similar to each other, with common interests and problems.
However, the need to promote kindness to improve mental health is not only applicable to the personal sphere. If not, the effects of kindness are also perceived in the workplace. Those committed to this sentiment, Germanotta assured, create a better environment among their colleagues and give better results to their companies.
