Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company Energoatum said the last two reactors operating at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant were disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid on Thursday.
She added that this came after fires, which were burning in the distance, destroyed the overhead power lines.
The company added that the fires broke out in ash pits at a coal plant near the Zaporozhye plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, and damaged power lines connecting it to the grid.
“As a result, the two power units operating at the plant have been disconnected from the grid,” Energoatum said in a statement.
She added that the station’s security systems are operating normally and work is underway to reconnect one of the two reactors to the electricity grid.
Russia said the two remaining units at the station should be closed due to the Ukrainian bombardment.
Russia took control of the Zaporizhia station last March. But Ukrainian technicians from Energoatum still operate it.
The power plant contains six reactors in total.
Recently, Moscow and Kiev exchanged accusations about the bombing of the station.
