The ‘Yes to Almaraz platform, yes to the future’ met Tuesday in Brussels with Eurodiputados of the PP, PSOE and Vox to defend the continuity of the Almaraz nuclear power plant, in Cáceres. Headed by their president, Fernando Sánchez, asked Europe to be “active and vigilant” in defense of the central and promote parliamentary initiatives to ensure energy autonomy and promote decarbonization.
Meats such as Elena Nevado (PP), Ignacio Sánchez Amor (PSOE) and Jorge Buxadé (Vox) participated in the meetings, along with representatives of the offices in Brussels of Extremadura, Community Valenciana and Castilla-La Mancha.
According to the calendar of government closures, all Spanish nuclear power plants will close in 2035, starting with Almaraz in 2028. The Extremadura plant has this year at most to be able to reach an agreement that allows them to continue operating.
Sanchez highlighted the importance of the central for Extremadura, a region with a GDP per capita of less than 75% of the EU average, FEDER Funds and the European Social Fund Plus. The platform seeks to encourage dialogue between the government and companies for the continuity of the central.
The work agenda has continued with a meeting in the General Directorate of the European Commission. This past Monday, the platform met with Berta Picamal, director of Legal Affairs and International Relations in Nuclear Europe.
The delegation includes Sánchez, Patricia Rubio, worker of the Central, and the mayors of Almaraz, Navalmoral de la Mata, Millanes and Toril, demonstrating the transverse character of the Defense of the Central. María Jesús González, General Secretary of the Association for Energy Transition (ATE) also participates.
The trip was financed through a crowdfunding campaign in Gofundme, where 10,000 euros were requested and more than 9,300 euros have been collected. The campaign is still open to complete expenses and perform new actions.
