As time progresses, maintaining servers for digital stores becomes a problem for many companies. We've already seen Nintendo completely close the Wii Shop Channel, and we recently had to say goodbye to the Wii U and 3DS eShop. Now, the next company that will join this trend will be Xbox, since the store 360 will end before August this year.
Through an official statement, it has been confirmed that The Xbox 360 store will close its doors on July 29, 2024. This means that a huge number of games will no longer be available to all users. This is what was said about it:
“The Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com) will retire on July 29, 2024.”
Although it will still be possible to access the content you have already purchased, your days are numbered to download the titles you have always wanted. Although much of this library is available today through re-releases, remasters and remakes, as well as Game Pass, There's still a lot you can only play today using the Xbox 360 store..
Examples of this are titles like Asura's Wrath, Lost Odyssey and the trilogy of Final Fantasy XIII, games that you currently cannot get any other way at the moment. Fortunately, The Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are backward compatible with the Xbox 360so you will have a place to enjoy your collection, as long as you manage to buy everything you want.
Along with this, Xbox is already working on its new console, and the company has indicated that they plan to continue supporting the preservation of the medium, so it is not ruled out that their next piece of hardware will also be backward compatible with the rest of their platforms. Remember, The Xbox 360 store will end on July 29, 2024. On related topics, you can learn more about the next Xbox console here. Likewise, the company would be working on two new generation hardware.
Editor's Note:
There's a lot of value in the Xbox 360 digital store. Hundreds of titles are only available here, and it's a shame that this part of the medium's history will likely be lost. Fortunately, emulation will always be an option to preserve everything we find here.
