The writer Abdullah bin Idris: the historian of Najdi poetry.. a man of balances

I know Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Drees, and his honorable brothers Idris, Saad, Sami, and Ziad, with grace, nobility, goodness, righteousness and generosity. A people in order to realize them, but they did not do, did not blame, and did not give up, so what was the good they came to it, it was inherited by their forefathers before, and did sin grow only when it grows and it is planted only in its spring palms!

Abdullah bin Idris went, to God’s mercy a few weeks ago, after a long life of exploits, wide traces, and it was right for the pen, to simplify his steps, to record the merits of this pioneer in his people, who is based on justice in his words and actions, and who moves with values in his coming and going, and the pious deal in his gain and his toil.

The ancients say: What is the best hadith that comes from its beginning…

Let us start the conversation from the beginning… from Wadi Al-Batin in Najd, central Saudi Arabia… from the town of “Harmah” in the province of Al-Washm. About a hundred years ago, “Hermah”, a small town in Sudair, was a quiet and peaceful town, surrounded by a wide wall, which gave life in it a spirit of intimacy and intimacy. People go to sleep in it after they perform the obligatory dinner, and the passerby passes through its muddy alleys at dawn, and hears the pounding of the mortar from his right, and hears a melodious recitation performing the string from his left, and looks in front of him and sees a man in his seventies, wearing his turban, going to his farm. A town that wakes up early, sleeps early, and its people toil hard in seeking livelihood and livelihood, in a difficult circumstance in which Najd lived before God rewarded people with oil, which expanded the situation after hardship, and people made it easier after insolvency.

The invitation of a mother and the hope of a father.. and the path of knowledge leads him to Riyadh!

When he appeared in the year 1347 AH – 1928, a child came to the world, his father named him “Abdullah”, and he is the guest of this space that is perfumed with his remembrance, and is filled with the scent of his perfume: Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Idris. It was in response to the supplication of a righteous mother, who prayed with grief in seclusion, that God grant her a son who has a reputation among people, after he sought the death-bath of her daughter who had given birth to her before him, and how often the dying people snatched young children in those times, and how many epidemics were killing people. In great waves.. The adults of Ibn Idris’ generation know strange dates and difficult years, such as the year of mercy, the year of warmth, and the years of drought and other diseases, gone forever, and after that prosperity came, may God perpetuate him. The father was a farmer, and he had a fortune in science, as he received a tip from one of the town’s scholars, and the founding King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman, may God have mercy on him, appointed him as an imam in one of the districts of Najd.

When the child Abdullah reached school age, his father enrolled him in the town’s school, which provided students with the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, in addition to teaching them the shortest surahs from the Great Qur’an. And the boy accepted the lesson in earnest, so he distinguished himself in his lesson from the rest of his peers, and memorized the entire Holy Qur’an, which is a rare achievement in that small town, which made a good father, to celebrate his son’s success, and adorn him in the streets of the town as the grooms, and to travel with his two-year-old son. ten years of age to Riyadh, to complete the quest for knowledge there. Neither the father nor the son lived in Riyadh for a long time. The father left for the afterlife, after a health problem, and the boy Abdullah returned to Haram, to work with his brothers in the palm plantation for three years. However, he saw his comfort, in the oases of study and not in the oases of palm trees, so he asked his brothers permission to travel to Riyadh again, to seek knowledge there, at the hands of Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim, who was the Mufti of Saudi Arabia at the time.

Student, professor..student of knowledge and companion of scholars

Two years of serious study at the hands of Sheikh Ibn Ibrahim, followed by the appointment of Ibn Idris, a teacher, at Al-Faisaliah Primary School in Riyadh. The oath is glorified in teaching and understanding it.

Only two years passed, until Ibn Idris heard about the opening of the Scientific Institute in Riyadh, which was a clear scientific breakthrough in those days, in which a group of great scientists and well-known intellectuals were taught. That institute, and among the institute’s teachers: Sheikh Abdul Razzaq Afifi, and the scholar of Al-Jazeera Hamad Al-Jasser, may God have mercy on them.

Ibn Idris had a connection with the Al-Jazirah sign, since those distant days, and it was only broken by Al-Jasser’s joining the ranks of the departed from this world, more than twenty years ago. In those days, the days of youthful youth, Ibn Idris began trying poetry and striving for it until it was straight, and his leadership was smooth in his hand.

God bless the beautiful dream boat

Here, hurricanes of misery erupt from behind the afternoon

And here my sail touched the winged wave in amazement

And the heart was drawn to the heavy halo of yesterday

To the safety of a beach we breathe the fresh wind

Well-versed academic and professional administrator

Ibn Idris hears of the opening of the College of Sharia in Riyadh, so he joins it, and is at the forefront of university students in the history of Saudi Arabia. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1376 AH (1957), among the first batch of graduates from that college, which was the first university college in the history of the Kingdom, to work as an inspector in scientific institutes, and within his work, he traveled to various scientific institutes scattered throughout the Kingdom… Ibn Idris used to write about his trips, with the pen of the literary traveler, and publish his articles in various newspapers of the country, so that he enjoyed and benefited… On his trips, he met a number of men of science and education, who took over the management of scientific institutes, such as Sheikh Muhammad bin Nasser Al-Aboudi, who He was the director of the Scientific Institute in Buraidah, and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Qarawi, who took over the management of the Scientific Institute in Jazan, on behalf of his student, the young scholar, Hafez Hakami. Ibn Idris was transferred to the Ministry of Education, where he worked as an assistant to the General Director of Secondary Education, then as Director of the Technical Education Department. … Although Ibn Idris did not specialize in vocational or agricultural education, an international envoy came to witness the performance of these schools, and he returned with gratitude and praise.

The return of the man of balance .. From the press to the Ministry of Education

During that time, and before and after him, Ibn Idris was a well-known writer, writing down his articles and poems, and sending them to various newspapers and magazines in the country, and the editors received them with good acceptance, and they were welcomed by the readers… The personality of the administrator was still conflicting with the personality of the writer, even The two personalities were authorized to make a convention, when Ibn Idriss services were loaned to the Al-Da`wah Press Foundation, as editor-in-chief of the weekly “Al-Dawa” newspaper. In “Al-Dawa”, Ibn Idris worked hard, leaving his son, the journalist Idris, to tell us about that stage, as he says: “My father took over as editor-in-chief of Al-Dawa newspaper, and made it at that time a remarkable newspaper with its approach different from the prevailing newspapers, and also distinguished by a certain boldness and transparency, and for its distinction Also, with the diversity consistent with his tolerant personality, the call to tradition and the prevailing stereotypical approach did not remain, but it was unique in its form and content in a way that made it a readable newspaper, whose opinion, sobriety and the quality of its writers are considered. When the father and his colleagues classified Al-Dawa newspaper at the beginning of its publication, he placed within its main doors sports pages, pages for women, and a third for jokes and salt. She leaves a calculated space for jokes and salt, that is, she jokes, but does not shake the dignity of the religious castle in Dukhna. Who is behind it? He is Abdullah bin Idris, a man of balance.”

Ibn Idris was editor-in-chief of the newspaper, then became general manager of the Islamic Call Foundation, in a precedent that took precedence, as the custom in Saudi press institutions was – and still is – that the editor-in-chief is not the general manager, but Ibn Idris did it ably. The period of Ibn Idris’ loan to Al-Da’wa newspaper ended, and he was again appointed to the Ministry of Education as Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Sciences, Arts and Letters, then went to Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University, where he worked for a few months, as Secretary-General of the University, then Director of Graduate Studies and Missions, and various works. … But the field of his greatest giving, was in the position of “General Director of Culture and Scientific Publishing”, which provided Arab readers with a large number of books, research and studies, until he reached the retirement age, in 1409 AH, 1988, so he turned to his personal and scientific affairs, to continue the journey of giving.

Notar of Najd etiquette.. and president of the Riyadh Literary Club

And we have no right, when we are talking about Ibn Idris, to forget his difference book, “The Contemporary Poets of Najd”, in which Ibn Idris collected the best written by poets in the middle of the kingdom, who were alive in his time. At the expense of King Saud, may God have mercy on him, who stipulated that the book be presented to a committee, which would examine it first, and remove from it what it did not find appropriate. Ibn Idris refused to touch the book, and he traveled to Cairo, printed the book at his expense, and took it to the heads of poets and writers, such as Al-Akkad, Al-Zayyat, Mandour, Taha Hussein, Bint Al-Shati, Nazik Al-Malaika, and others… Then Ibn Idris issued a book entitled : “King Abdulaziz as portrayed by Arab poets”, and a third book entitled: “Poetry and Poets during the second half of the fourteenth century”, several collections of poetry, and various books, except for what I have mentioned.

In Riyadh, Ibn Idris lived most of his more than ninety years, and was at the head of the Riyadh Literary Club, which was a cultural front for Riyadh. 1980 AD until 1423 AH / 2002.

The founding generation.. the lingering effect

Ibn Idris is too broad to be surrounded by a small article, and too big to contain a few lines like this. He is a seasoned administrator, a distinguished journalist, an encyclopedic intellectual, a gentle poet, a brilliant critic, and a man of public relations, and he is a father whose sons remember him well, and they talk about his virtues. With pride.. his biography was discussed by a number of scholars, in books, academic studies, university theses and press articles, and the right of a man like him: long life, good work, and many types of achievements in life, a right for his likeness, to be appreciated, and pages to be praised for him. , and contemplate its unique condition.

Ibn Idris, whom we recall today, after he left next to his Lord, so we remember a man, from the generation of pioneers, who realized the days before oil, and lived through the foundation of the country, and were at the forefront of the country’s scholars and intellectuals, who gave it a lot, and were candles in the night that dissipated With their hands, they were the harbingers of dawn that they ignited with their efforts. May God have mercy on you, O Ibn Idris, and those who left behind sons known for their kindness and good manners did not die. And they are yours, as I said, to the partner of life, about their goodness: “They are always the treasure in this life, and they are our treasure throughout the years.”
