Smith had 73 years old, most of which he spent at the edge of that green grass that gave him so much satisfaction.
As a young man he was an excellent central defender. He had worn the shirts of Dumbarton and Dundee United. In total he had played over 200 games, even scoring three goals. Subsequently he had necessarily had to take off his shoes, for a serious injury to the pelvic area.

Walter Smith’s coaching career
As anticipated, it was mostly his coaching career that brought Smith into the football legend.
He started in 1982 to coach theunder 21 of the Scottish national team. Then, from 1985 to 1987 he was the assistant coach of the senior national team.
