The world of Japanese cinema says goodbye to Sonny Chiba, who died at 82 from pneumonia caused by COVID-19, which required hospitalization on August 8 as it was getting worse. According to the actor’s agency, Chiba was not vaccinated.
Born as Sadaho Maeda in 1939 a Fukuoka, then took on the stage names Shinichi Chiba And Sonny Chiba (the latter to meet the international public).
Among the various conematographic films in which Chiba appeared we quote Golgo 13: The Kowloon Assignment, Battle Royale II: Requiem, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but especially in Kill Bill, the masterpiece of Quentin Tarantino, where he played the role of Hattori Hanzo.
Just the same Tarantino described it as “the greatest actor who ever worked in martial arts movies“.
