The World Health Organization said that half of the possible cases were recorded in the European region, including 267 in Britain, while a third of the possible cases were recorded in the United States.
The organization indicated that health authorities around the world are investigating the mysterious rise in cases of acute hepatitis in children.
The outbreak was first recorded in Britain in April, and later infected dozens of other countries, according to “Reuters”.
Hepatitis occurs when liver cells become infected with a virus, and the disease can destroy and damage liver cells.
Sometimes people with hepatitis do not show any symptoms, but the most common are nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, dryness and yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine and light-colored stools.
The American Center for Disease Control recommends preventive measures to prevent children from contracting this disease, including obtaining the required vaccinations, avoiding contact with patients, not touching the eyes, nose or mouth until after washing hands, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
