On Thursday, the World Health Organization expressed concern about the global decline in tests to detect the emerging corona virus.
Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the technical team on Covid-19 at the international organization, said that the decline in testing means that the discovery of new strains is becoming increasingly difficult.
And Van Kerkhove stated, during a press conference in Geneva, that the virus was still transmitted “at a very high level around the world.” She expressed concern about the way the virus continues to mutate.
“This is a matter of great concern to us,” the expert added. Our ability to monitor strains and subspecies around the world is declining because of low follow-up.”
The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stressed again Thursday that while the end of the pandemic is on the horizon, strategies to combat it must continue.
Gebresos said, via a video link from New York, where he attends the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly: The world “began to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” adding, “But we haven’t reached there yet.”
