The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Infrastructure, Contracting and Development, begins this Thursday work to remove the concrete mixer and the structure and rolling area of the bridge that fell into the river Segura three weeks ago due to the negligence of the driver .
The accident was caused on March 29 by a concrete mixer vehicle on the bridge that crossed the Segura river, in the section that connects the Secano de El Raal with La Basca de Beniel. From the first moment, the Development Service began to develop a specific plan for the removal of the truck and the elements of the bridge due to the complexity of the works.
The Councilor for Infrastructures, Contracting and Development, Mario Gómez, stressed that “the incident was joined by the disparity of competences since the riverbed is a public domain belonging to the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, and the bridge was between the terms of Beniel and Murcia, its ownership being undetermined. To all this is added the obligation to contact the company of the vehicle or the company that owns it since they are responsible for the damage caused and the responsibility of the same must be legally determined “.
Finally and in record time, the municipal development technicians and the three administrations – Murcia City Council, Beniel City Council and CHS – have been able to act efficiently by drafting the reports of the work to be carried out, the budgets, the safety plans, the permits and other necessary documentation to ensure that the winning company is from this Wednesday working on the scene with the necessary machinery and carrying out all the necessary preliminary works to access the channel and be able to remove the vehicle and proceed with the demolition of the debris and damaged structure of the damaged bridge. “It was a priority for this administration to work urgently in order to remove all the obstacles deposited in the Segura river bed and thus avoid unforeseeable problems due to possible rains,” said Gómez.
Technical supervision of the City Council and the CHS
These actions will be carried out by the insurance company Reale Seguros Generales SA with the prior authorizations of all administrations and the technical supervision of both the municipal services of the Murcia City Council and the Segura Hydrographic Confederation.
The councilor thanked “the collaboration received from the CHS, the insurance company and the Beniel City Council so that this work is already underway and they can begin to remove all the materials from the bridge deposited in the great channel, thus fueling the security of the area and avoiding that other damages can be caused in the River”.
«From the Department of Public Works we have already carried out a blueprint of the new bridge and the legal services of the administration are already working on the coordination with the Insurance Company for the construction of the new bridge in the shortest time possible, ”Gómez concluded.
