Covid continues to claim victims and could deal a heavy blow to Europe in the coming weeks. The director of the World Health Organization in Europe sounded the alarm, Hans Kluge who explained: “Between now and December 1st, Europe could record another 236,000 deaths due to Covid. The estimate is reliable if we consider that the number of deaths has increased by 11% in a week ”.
The WHO-Europe director underlined how this data is very worrying also due to the low vaccination rate, among the categories considered most at risk, in some countries of the continent. The growth of infections – explains the UN agency – is mainly due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant, the relaxation of restrictions and the increase in the number of trips and movements made during the summer months.
“We must be firm and resolute in keeping the various protective measures active, including the immunization campaign and the use of masks. Vaccines are the most effective way to initiate reopenings and stabilize economies ”, concluded Kluge.
