“They’re going to try to recover,” National Security spokesman John Kirby said. “We’re watching to see what they do to try to fill this leadership void.”
Referring to the raid that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Kirby said, “I think people are safer without him.” However, in his interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” program, he avoided answering questions about whether the American administration agreed with the way Israel targeted Hezbollah leaders.
Lebanese officials announced that the raids resulted in the deaths of many civilians.
The White House continues to call on Israel and Hezbollah to agree to a temporary ceasefire for 21 days, which was proposed by the United States, France and other countries last week, but was rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
