Gustavo Petro asks the OAS to “bet on world peace”

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, reacted in his X account to the Iranian attack against Israel and, in the process, attacked the Organization of American States. “Genocide is and precedes all barbarism,” the president said on the social network. Citing statements by Luis Almagro, secretary general of the OAS, he questioned whether the organization “unequivocally” condemned Iran's attacks on Israel, instead of “bet on world peace.” And it was not the first statement he made in this regard.

Minutes earlier, citing fake news about an alleged threat from Vladimir Putin to the United States, he had shared his perception of the reasons for the escalation of violence. “It was predictable; “Now we are in the prelude to World War III precisely when humanity should rebuild its economy towards the rapid goal of decarbonization.” That publication was deleted in less than an hour.

Diplomatic relations between Colombia and Israel reached their peak in November, after Petro described the Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip as “genocidal.” Although the situation seemed to calm down, on March 26, the Colombian president returned to the issue and welcomed the fact that the UN Security Council ordered a ceasefire in Gaza. “I invite the nations of the world to break diplomatic relations with that country if Israel breaks this ceasefire,” he stated on that occasion, also in X.
