Virologist Alexander Chepurnov spoke about the peculiarities of the treatment of the “delta” variant of coronavirus in an interview with the radio Sputnik…
Unlike the “Wuhan” version, for which a lot has already been worked out, the “delta” is more difficult to treat, since in this case the gastroenterological component and the rate of development of the disease play a role, the specialist noted. At the same time, there is still no exact idea whether the new variant of the coronavirus is causing a more severe course of the disease.
Determining which variant of the coronavirus a patient got sick, according to Chepurnov, “is relatively troublesome and expensive.” To do this, it is necessary to decipher the genome of the virus, while the PCR test will be much cheaper and will be done faster. “But you can also configure the PCR so that it will be possible to identify a particular strain. It’s just that this is not critical enough yet, and so far not all test system developers have come to this, ”he concluded.
Earlier, a molecular biologist, a researcher at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Sergei Kharitonov, named the categories of Russians who are most at risk of contracting the “delta” variant. According to him, it is no more deadly than other species, but it spreads faster in risk groups, where people die more often. At the same time, in those who have been ill or vaccinated, the risk of death is minimal.
