A cycling trip to discover one of the most unspoiled areas of Italy
The Cilento it is one of the most uncontaminated and less man-made territories in Italy. Located in the southern part of Campania, the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni is one of the largest in Italy, an area that hosts the Via Dumbledorea path of 600 kilometers that winds between coastal stretches and mountains.
The itinerary has been conventionally divided into 15 stages, including an optional portion for climbers which involves reaching the summit of the Monte CervatiCima Coppi of the itinerary with its 1898 meters.
The route starts from the village of Castelnuovo Cilento, a few kilometers from the Vallo della Lucania – Castelnuovo railway station. The first hilly stretch reaches the coast in the small fishing village of Pioppi, and then proceeds inland towards Castellabate. From this point you cycle for 400 km inland, along the Calore river, admiring the caves of Castelcivita and Pertosa, crossing plateaus, beech woods, valleys dotted with orchids and enchanting peasant villages.
If you decide to keep a daily average of 40 km the stage locations are PollicaVatolla, Cicerale, Felitto, Petina, Roscigno, Teggiano, Sanza (from which the round trip to Monte Cervati starts), Casaletto Spartano, San Giovanni a Piro, PalinuroCeraso, Mount Gebilson and Castelnuovo Cilento.
In Velina, a hamlet of Castelnuovo Cilento, in via Velina 96, there is the headquarters of the Via Silente, where it is possible to collect The Silentina, the document with which the cycle traveler can certify his presence on the cycle path and guarantee himself room and board at agreed prices. At the end of each stage, cyclists must have it affixed the stamp to the manager of the accommodation facilities, a bit like what happens with credentials in the great paths. Thanks to this device it is possible to monitor tourist flows in the Cilento area and have feedback on the functioning of the reception.
