The Russian research vessel Akademik Ioffe, which was detained in early November at the suit of the Canadian company One Ocean Expeditions, arrived at the port of Kaliningrad, Izvestia’s correspondent reports.
On December 7, it became known that a court in Denmark ruled to lift the arrest from the Russian ship. On the same day, the ship left Denmark and headed for Russia.
The detention of “Akademik Ioffe” took place in Denmark on November 1. The seizure of the ship was carried out “as an interim measure in a third party claim related to previous activities,” as reported by the Russian embassy. At the time of the arrest, there were 38 crew members and 23 scientific workers on board.
In August 2018, the ship crashed into a rock and ran aground in Nunavut Bay, where the seabed is poorly understood. At that time, Akademik Ioffe was working under a charter agreement for the Canadian cruise company One Ocean Expeditions.
One Ocean urgently sent to the rescue “Akademik Vavilov”, which was already carrying passengers. The company organized charter flights to take all tourists out of the Arctic and send them home. According to Canadian media reports, this cost her $ 2.8 million.
The company believed that the Russians who controlled the ship were to blame for the incident.
In 2018, One Ocean Expeditions began to have financial problems, and due to the debt to the intermediary firm, the courts “Akademik Ioffe” and “Akademik Sergei Vavilov” were seized. Because of this, the sales of the cruises of the Canadian company collapsed; it could not fulfill the obligations to pay for the lease of the last remaining vessel.
In November 2021, One Ocean Expeditions filed a lawsuit for $ 19 million. The organization said that due to the grounded Akademik Ioffe suffered $ 6.5 million in damage, and the amount of costs due to the recalled ships amounted to $ 12.5 million.
“Akademik Ioffe” is a 117-meter research vessel built in 1988 and named after the Soviet physicist Abram Fedorovich Ioffe. It has the status of a unique scientific installation (UNU) and is used for experiments on long-range sound propagation in the ocean.
