The Vatican Bank fired a couple who got married despite the ban
A man and a woman were fired from their jobs at the Vatican Bank because they violated a ban on marriage between employees. About this writes The Guardian.
The young couple, nicknamed “Romeo and Juliet” in the Italian press, got married in August after the bank banned marriages between employees. The rule was introduced to avoid reputational risks associated with nepotism – the provision of privileges to relatives or friends, regardless of their professional qualities.
Clerks who married were given 30 days for one of them to resign. In this case, the other person was allowed to keep his job. Neither of them wanted to do this, so both were fired after the October 1st deadline. The Vatican Bank said its management had made the “difficult decision” to terminate the contracts. “This decision, made with deep regret, was dictated by the need to maintain transparency and impartiality in the activities of the institution and in no way undermines the right of two people to form a union in marriage,” the bank said.
The Vatican Bank announced the ban in April. It came into force only after there were no married couples left among its employees. The rule also prohibits employees from marrying those who work in other Vatican institutions. The public learned about this only after the fired spouses spoke about what happened in the media.

In September, the newlyweds also sent a letter to Pope Francis, who had previously approved a ban on marriages between employees. Additionally, ADLV, the Vatican’s lay association, issued a statement on behalf of the couple, arguing that “the birth of a new family should not be jeopardized by bureaucratic rules.” The newlyweds have the opportunity to go to the Vatican court and challenge the decision of their former employer.
Earlier it was reported that in Hungary, Catholic priest Gergo Bese, known for his conservative views, was convicted of participating in gay parties and filming porn. After the scandal, he was removed from ministry.
