Representatives of the US Republican Party are going on Tuesday, January 12, to submit to the House of Representatives a resolution censuring incumbent President Donald Trump in connection with the storming of the Capitol, Republican Congressman Tom Reid wrote in his article for New York Times…
“I intend on Tuesday to join my colleagues in the House of Representatives in submitting a censure resolution to ensure immediate accountability for the January 6 events. We also need to consider alternatives that could allow Congress to bar Mr Trump from holding federal office in the future, ”he said.
At the same time, Reed stressed that impeachment a few days before the expiration of Trump’s term would be a serious mistake, forever blurring the meaning of this important constitutional provision. “We cannot and should not support hasty actions that cause divisions simply because current emotions demand it. This is not American, ”said the congressman.
The condemnation of Congress has no actual consequences, but it can have a huge negative impact on Trump’s historical reputation. Congress passed it to only two presidents in history – Andrew Jackson in 1834 and James Buchanan in 1860, with Jackson subsequently getting the censure removed. All other attempts with dozens of other American leaders, including eminent ones like Abraham Lincoln, either failed or ended with the censure being expressed in general terms without mentioning the president.
Earlier on Monday, US President-elect Joseph Biden said the incumbent head of the White House, Donald Trump, should not be in power. In his opinion, for those who are involved in the storming of the Capitol, responsibility must come.
On the same day, representatives of the US Democratic Party formally submitted to the House of Representatives a resolution to impeach incumbent President Donald Trump, accusing him of inciting insurrection.
In the document, US Vice President Mike Pence calls for the 25th amendment to the constitution to be activated and Trump’s removal from power. Earlier that day, it was noted that if Pence does not respond to the request within 24 hours, then the document of impeachment will be submitted to the plenary session of the House of Representatives the next day, that is, January 12.
On January 11, the House of Representatives published the text of the resolution to impeach Trump. The authors of the document believe that the current US president will remain a threat to national security, democracy and the country’s constitution, based on his actions on the day of unrest near the congress.
