Republican from the US House of Representatives Jim Banks presented his draft sanctions against Russia, including against President Vladimir Putin, a number of journalists, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and high-ranking Russian officials and security officials. The content of the project was presented by the newspaper The Washington Post.
Sanctions are proposed to be imposed, among other things, on Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko and First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Sergei Kiriyenko. The congressman also proposed a ban on operations with Russian government debt, sanctions against a number of businessmen, and an end to the cybersecurity dialogue (“until the attacks on US agencies are over”).
Banks, in particular, proposes to recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism” and declare that it supports “terrorist forces” in the Donbass. In addition, the Republican insists on ending negotiations on strategic stability as long as the Crimean peninsula is part of the Russian Federation.
The draft was submitted on January 19, but so far its text has not been officially published.
