The US has not lifted any sanctions on Venezuela, according to Diosdado Cabello

The United States government “has not lifted sanctions on Venezuela,” said Chavista leader Diosdado Cabello on Wednesday. a week after the administration of President Joe Biden announced a partial relaxation of the measures against the Caribbean country.

“The United States has not lifted any sanctions against Venezuela (…) here they have not lifted any sanctions against Venezuela and knowing the gringos I doubt, that even if they have their word, they fulfill it,” said Cabello on his weekly television program.

The United States announced on May 17 that it will make some sanctions against Venezuela more flexible, including one linked to the oil company Chevron, in order to promote dialogue between the Maduro government and the opposition.

The decision to relax the sanctions applied by the United States to force the departure of Maduro, whose re-election in 2018 they consider “fraudulent”, encouraged a meeting between delegates from Chavismo and the opposition with a focus on “rescue the spirit” of the negotiations in Mexico suspended in October.

According to an American official, Sanction relief includes “limited license” for oil company Chevron to negotiate “possible future activities” in the midst of an embargo on Venezuelan crude in force since 2019, and “another measure” that will be announced later by the Treasury.

“Here there has been no lifting of sanctions or blockades,” insisted Cabello, considered the number two of Chavismo.

Maduro, who calls the sanctions “criminal”, received a delegation from Biden in Caracas in March of this year, at a time when Washington seeks to isolate Russia from its allies after the invasion of Ukraine.
