WP: The US does not have enough nuclear submarines to repel threats
The US Navy’s fleet of nuclear attack submarines does not have a sufficient number of nuclear submarines to repel all threats, about this writes columnist George Will in an article for The Washington Post (WP).
According to him, the country currently has 50 attack submarines. At the same time, the Navy command believes that 66 submarines of this class are needed to solve modern problems.
Of the 50 attack submarines, 20 are in dry docks or tied to piers due to the Navy’s lagging repair schedules, the journalist listed.
“American submarines may not be sufficient to maintain world peace during today’s multifrontal assault on geopolitical rationality,” the author emphasized.
Previously, the US Navy postponed the construction of a new generation attack submarine (Project SSN(X)) due to insufficient funding.
