The Plenary of the participation body validates the budgets for 2022, in a session that Eugenio Galdón refuses to preside due to his interim situation
After two days of uncertainty and controversy, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) yesterday put forward its budgets for 2022 in the Plenary of the Social Council, which approved the project of the rector team unanimously. He did, of course, in a session that evidenced the conflict over the interim position of the president of the Council, Eugenio Galdón, and the consequent fear of the rectory team that the accounts would be rejected.
Although it had no practical consequences, Galdón, who insists on being replaced because his term expired two years ago, refused to preside over the meeting and handed over the presidency to Santiago López Noguera, proposed like him by the regional government.
According to university sources confirmed to LA VERDAD, Galdón intervened telematically from Madrid and, after communicating his decision, left the meeting. Later, the unease in the Council and the UPCT over the delay in appointing a new president and the negative effects this has had on the processing of budgets and on the University’s image came to light. This concern is contributed by the fact that there are four vocal positions pending to be filled, also since 2019, by the Regional Assembly.
The businessman has been claiming his replacement for two years, which the Community promises to solve in early 2022
On behalf of the City Council, the Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, mentioned the steps that the Executive of the Autonomous Community is taking to find a replacement for Galdón, a businessman from Cartagena who chairs the Everis Foundation and founded the ONO telecommunications company. Already on Tuesday, at the San Esteban Palace, in Murcia, President Fernando López Miras and the Minister of Universities, Valle Miguélez, assured the rector Beatriz Miguel and other directors of the Polytechnic that in January or February they will put on the table the name of a person with a profile that unites the University with the company.
More staff costs
Despite this official announcement, Beatriz Miguel maintained her fear that some representative of the Social Council, in the exercise of their “independence”, would not support the accounts for next year. In the end, that did not happen. Once the Council’s stumbling block has been overcome, the Polytechnic will be able to execute a budget of 68 million euros from January. This amount represents 8.3% more than this year. To cover the 3.5% increase in personnel expenses, the UPCT will use some 5 million euros of cash surpluses.
