“I am optimistic and I hope you can bear me for a long time”: Gianluca Vialli says he is still struggling with cancer
Gianluca Vialli he is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports figures of recent years in Italy. His fame as a former footballer certainly always preceded him, but even in his post career he proved to be a great personality in the service of this sport. He also showed great personality and courage in another game that he has been “playing” for some time. The one with the cancer.
It was the first months of 2018, when Gianluca Vialli received from his doctor the news that it would devastate anyone. A diagnosis very specific, that of pancreatic cancer, which presented him with the greatest challenge of his life.
That challenge made up of visits, chemotherapies, checks, lasted a good 17 months, until December 2019. In the first months of 2020, then, it was he who was proud and happy to have defeated the disease.
In December, I finished seventeen months of chemotherapy, one course of eight months and another of nine. It was tough, even for a tough guy like me. Hard, physically and mentally. The tests showed no signs of disease. I am happy, even if I say it softly
Gianluca Vialli still struggling with the disease
A long time has passed since that announcement in April 2020. Time made of concern for the Covid, but also very large ones satisfactions in the workplace.
Gianluca Vialli, in fact, has dressed and still plays the role of head of delegation of the national football team Italian led by Roberto Mancini. That dream team that brought us all last July on the roof of Europe.
In a recent interview, issued to reporters of Cremona 1, Vialli also wanted to talk about his friend and colleague Mancini:
Roberto is the absolute monarch, even if then the environment turns into a certain democracy. He is a leader, I thank him for what he made me live!
Then, he also spoke of his again illness, who apparently comes back to visit him every now and then.
The unwanted guest is still with me, sometimes more present, sometimes less. I hope you can bear me for many years but I am confident and optimistic, those around me give me strength and courage.
