The work, coordinated by Professor Francisco Chacón and in which eleven researchers have participated, addresses data from prehistory to the present
The University of Murcia and the City of San Javier have presented the work ‘Historia de San Javier. Past and present of a Western Mediterranean society ‘, which involves a complete revision of the history of the municipality long before it existed as such. The work has been coordinated by the emeritus professor of Modern History Francisco Chacón, who has brought together eleven researchers for this project. The result of this enormous documentation work was made known at a ceremony held at the San Javier Town Hall, in which the rector of the UMU, José Luján, and the mayor of the municipality, José Miguel Luengo; and the professor at the University of Lleida Roberto Fernández, winner of the National History Award, as well as Chacón himself.
The work is divided into two volumes: ‘San Javier and its influence on the formation of the Mar Menor region’ and ‘The process of shaping the socio-political community of San Javier. From the creation of the city council to the present moment ‘.
In this way, the first volume provides historical information on the place that the municipality currently occupies since prehistory, through its connection to the Phoenician world and the Middle Ages; as well as the creation of the first church in 1698, which marked the social and commercial relations of the area. The second volume already collects the history of the municipality, created in 1836, to the present day.
“One of the most significant things that is evident in this work is the great importance that cultural aspects have in the municipality, which is not so common for a town of its size,” says Professor Chacón, who also stands out as one of the aspects of greatest documentary value, having been able to produce a file with the image of all the mayors that San Javier has had throughout its history.
This work has been edited by Editum, a publisher of the University of Murcia, financed by the City of San Javier.
