The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, noted in a statement that this money will address the needs both of internally displaced people, of refugees in Lebanon and of the communities that host them.
The aid will also benefit those fleeing neighboring Syria, highlighted the head of US diplomacy.
The 157 million includes almost 82 available immediately through the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration and 75 through the Office of Humanitarian Assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Of that last amount, USAID has already deployed 11.5 million and, in collaboration with Congress, plans to make another 63.5 million available in the coming weeks to ensure that that support can continue to reach the most vulnerable.
“This emergency assistance with food, shelter, blankets, hygiene kits, protection, water and sanitation will be a critical lifeline for those who have endured unimaginable hardships,” Blinken said.
His statement recalled that The United States has already provided nearly $386 million in the last year to the neediest populations in Lebanon and Syria.
This new package, in his opinion, arrives in the midst of a “devastating humanitarian crisis” in Lebanon, with more than a million people displaced from their homes, whom Joe Biden’s Administration promised to continue helping.
