The results of voting for the anti-Russian resolution condemning the holding of referendums on joining Russia in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) turned out to be absolutely expected. This was announced on Thursday, October 13, by Andrey Korobkov, professor of political science at the University of Tennessee.
“The majority supported the United States, while a number of states voted against or abstained. For Russia, the most important thing was the behavior of China, India, South Africa, which, in particular, abstained from voting. As for the majority, of course, they supported the United States, both because the Americans have the opportunity to exert pressure, and because this issue is considered as a system-forming one, it concerns the sovereignty of states, their ability to control their own territory, ”said Korobkov.
As he noted, most of the countries of the world are wary of the precedent of changing borders, since “they themselves have some problems in terms of their territorial integrity.”
“No sensations happened except for one. The sensation was Albania’s demand for an open vote. Approximately as many countries supported the idea of an open vote as they later voted in favor of the resolution, about the same number of countries voted against, which later either opposed such a resolution or abstained from voting,” the professor concluded.
Earlier, on October 12, US President Joe Biden called the UN General Assembly resolution a demonstration that the world is more united than ever in rejecting Russia’s actions in Ukraine. In addition, he noted that the world “is determined to hold Russia accountable for its violations.”
Also, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN General Assembly, said that the results of voting on the resolution indicate a regression in world diplomacy. According to him, about 40 member countries of the international organization were subjected to pressure from the collective West.
On the same day, the UN General Assembly adopted an anti-Russian resolution not recognizing referendums in the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. It is noted that 143 countries voted for the adoption of the resolution, five states voted against – the Russian Federation, Belarus, Syria, North Korea, Nicaragua, another 35 countries abstained.
At the same time, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, called the draft resolution provocative. According to him, he is able to undermine possible diplomatic efforts.
On October 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed the view that the reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC) is overdue, and the persistent underrepresentation of developing countries must be addressed. He stressed that seven of the 15 members of the UN Security Council represent the collective West.
On October 10, the UN General Assembly supported the proposal of Albania, which called for an open vote on a resolution condemning the annexation of new territories to the Russian Federation following referendums.
On October 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a federal constitutional law on the entry of the liberated regions into the Russian Federation. Prior to that, in the period from 23 to 27 September, referendums were held on the issue of joining Russia. According to the results of processing 100% of the ballots, 99.23% of citizens voted for joining Russia in the DPR, 98.42% in the LPR, 87.05% in the Kherson region, and 93.11% in the Zaporozhye region.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
