Yesterday, the United Nations World Health Organization announced the start of treatment for 18,000 Yemeni children under the age of five suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
In a statement yesterday, the organization stated that it had started providing essential medicines, equipment and training to eight high-priority hospitals in Yemen to treat severe acute malnutrition among children under the age of five, with the support of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.
According to the statement, “about 18,000 children who will be treated for acute malnutrition in these eight hospitals will directly benefit during the next nine months.”
The statement added that the World Health Organization will support the pediatric units in these hospitals with essential medicines and equipment, train health workers, and enhance technical knowledge and competencies, to treat and mitigate the return of severe acute malnutrition cases among Yemeni infants and children.
The statement pointed out that “the eight-year conflict, and the resulting economic and infrastructure collapse, increased the risk of famine in the country, as two-thirds of the districts were classified as pre-famine.”
The statement quoted Adham Rashad, the representative of the World Health Organization in Yemen, as saying that “this intervention saves the lives of thousands of children, and helps to promote nutrition to improve children’s health.”
