UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the death toll from the attack was from the top in Mali, where peacekeepers are exposed to the largest number of attacks among other UN peacekeeping forces.
He added that the device exploded in Bandiagara region and hit a vehicle carrying peacekeepers from Togo who were part of a United Nations logistics convoy heading from Douentza to Sevare.
He also stated that Secretary-General António Guterres called on the Malian authorities “to make all efforts to quickly identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
He explained that the Secretary-General of the United Nations sends his condolences to the families, government and people of Togo and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.
Attacks by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda against the Malian army began in 2015, and insecurity escalated with attacks on civilians and UN peacekeepers in the country.
