In it, the 193 member countries will discuss the resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine vetoed by Moscow
The United Nations Security Council met this Sunday to vote on an extraordinary call for the General Assembly on the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis that will take place this Monday. In it, the 193 member countries will discuss the resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine vetoed by Moscow. In the session, requested by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, members of the UN Department of Humanitarian Affairs and the High Commissioner for Refugees will participate.
This new election is carried out in such a way that none of the five permanent members of the Security Council, including Russia, will be able to exercise their traditional right of veto and only nine votes in favor are necessary for its approval.
It should be remembered that the General Assembly has only held emergency meetings ten times in the last seventy years. The vote, according to diplomatic sources, will begin at 9:00 p.m. Spanish peninsular time.
Russia exercised its right to veto to prevent the initial approval, last Friday, of the resolution against its military offensive in Ukraine. The vote had eleven votes in favor, one against and three abstentions. China, which for the moment has refused to criticize the attack – however, calls for a negotiated solution to the conflict – was one of the three abstentions, along with India and the United Arab Emirates.
