Russia’s recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) does not comply with the basic principles of the organization’s charter, said UN Secretary General António Guterres, reports RIA News.
“In particular, I would note the principle of the sovereign equality of states and the assertion that the territorial integrity and political independence of a state are inviolable,” he said. Guterres said he considers Russia’s actions also contrary to General Assembly resolutions that uphold the territorial integrity of states.
Earlier, the UN Secretary General said that what is happening in the Donbass is not a genocide, and the Russian military, if they are brought into the Donbass, cannot be considered a peacekeeping contingent.
In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that the statements of the UN Secretary General on the situation in eastern Ukraine do not correspond to his status and powers under the organization’s charter. He added that Russian diplomats brought to Guterres Moscow’s assessment of his statements.
