Almost all the countries of the world met in Geneva to discuss the prevention of the loss of biodiversity on planet earth. This meeting aims to prevent the extinction of vulnerable species, the appearance of pathogens such as the coronavirus and the damage that occurs in habitats around the world.
At this two-week meeting in Geneva, more than 190 countries have the opportunity for the first time, after the pandemic, to discuss the ‘Convention on Biological Diversity’. This meeting is part of the planning prior to the final conference -and the most important- in China, where an international agreement for the protection of biodiversity will be reached.
One of the central points in this discussion is the recent call by the United Nations to the countries to implement conservation mechanisms of their territories of at least 30% by the year 2030, this plan is known as: ’30 by 30′ .
For its part, ‘The Campaign for Nature’, based in the US, pointed out that the protection of continental waters and the oceans will also be discussed to stop the damage to habitats due to the exploitation of nature by part of humans.
The executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, pointed out that Covid-19 demonstrated how important biodiversity is for human beings, but also for the care of the planet.
He indicated that, due to the expansion of people to rural areas, the destruction of habitats, such as deforestation, has deepened. He also stressed that the interference of people in the animal kingdom caused pathogens that are not harmful to animals to affect humans.
🌡️ Warming 🌍 of 1.7 °C ➡️ between 17 and 40 million people could migrate internally in sub-Saharan Africa.
🌡️ Warming 🌍 of 2.5 °C ➡️ this figure rises to between 56 and 86 million people.
Every fraction of a degree matters.

The experts of the Convention determine five causes of the loss of biodiversity: Changes in the treatment of land and sea, climate change, activities such as unsustainable agriculture, pollution and the invasion of exotic species in new habitats. In addition, unsustainable production and consumption add to this chaotic scenario.
Finally, Mrema added that a key issue will be efforts to rethink harmful subsidies that affect the environment. For the meeting in China, one of the proposals that is being prepared aims to demand that at least 700,000 million be invested to preserve biodiversity. The discussion also includes looking for ways to reduce plastic pollution.
The talks may be affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine
The meetings between the different delegations take place in the middle of the war. As reported by Reuters, during the opening session, several Western countries condemned Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. At the same time, the delegations of both countries clashed over the environmental issue.
Due to the war, none of the countries sent representatives to the place, the diplomats who attended were previously in Switzerland.
A report prepared by the WWF points out that the UN draft is not “ambitious” and is not “sufficient” to meet its objective of “preserving and reversing the loss of nature”.
