The UN General Assembly (GA) approved the resolution of the Russian Federation on strengthening the system of arms control treaties. The corresponding decision was made on Wednesday, December 7, following the meeting of the international organization.
The authors of the initiative call for the full fulfillment of obligations by the countries participating in agreements on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. It also emphasizes the need to work on strengthening the deterrence system, since the refusal to cooperate in this area undermines global stability and international security.
Separately, the drafters of the resolution singled out the role of UN Secretary-General António Guterres in maintaining the integrity and improving such treaties through various incentives.
noted, that the proposal was supported by 173 voters, one opposed and nine abstained. Earlier, the document was approved by the relevant First Committee of the General Assembly.
Earlier, on December 6, it became known that Russia asked the UN Security Council (SC) to hold a meeting on December 9 on the issue of supplying Western weapons to Ukraine. Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the World Organization Vasily Nebenzya recalled the statement of the President of Nigeria, who said that the conflict in Ukraine is the main source of weapons for terrorists in the Lake Chad basin. According to the permanent representative, transnational criminal groups are involved in smuggling and money laundering.
Prior to that, on November 25, the participants in the Ottawa Treaty on the Destruction of Anti-Personnel Mine stated that Ukraine had not yet fulfilled the terms of the agreement. In particular, it is alleged that Kyiv still has about 3.3 million mines “Petal”. The Ukrainian authorities promise to reduce the number of banned ammunition in the country by April 2023.
