These were the last words of the thirteen Ukrainian heroes defending an islet in the Black Sea before they were killed by a battleship shelling
All wars have their epic situations and scenes that are remembered over time. The Ukrainian media and the Government itself have already elevated to that category the small detachment of 13 soldiers who yesterday defended “until death” a small uninhabited islet in the Black Sea known as Snake Island, about 50 kilometers from the border with Romania . This is what is known as the Ukrainian resistance to Russia’s show of force.
The last radio communication of the head of the small unit reveals his dialectical confrontation with the commander of a Russian ship involved in the attack on Ukraine on the southern flank. Several Ukrainian media confirm that the Russian officer invited the soldiers defending the islet to surrender. “This is a warship. I repeat, this is a Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid unnecessary bloodshed and casualties. Otherwise, they will be bombed.”
The sharp ultimatum of the Russians had, according to the Ukrainian authorities, a brave response by the commanding officer. “Russian warship, fuck you.” So sharp. So forceful. And then the silence. The radio station of the Ukrainian soldiers was not activated again and the thirteen soldiers died moments later after the bombardment of the battleship. President Zelensky’s government has promised to honor fallen Coast Guardsmen for their courage.
