On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on his Western allies to provide his country with additional air defense systems to protect Kharkiv and other cities.
“The lack of political will among the leaders must be overcome,” Zelensky said via the Telegram application.
He added, “The two Patriot missile systems in Kharkiv would make a fundamental difference.”
He stressed that supplying other cities with air defense systems and adequate support for soldiers on the front line will ensure victory over Russia.
The Ukrainian president’s appeal comes after at least 11 people were killed and 27 others were injured, at the time of today’s race, in air strikes on the outskirts of Kharkiv, the second largest Ukrainian city, and two villages in an area close to it.
A month ago, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced plans to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, as NATO member states intend to support Ukraine either directly by providing it with air defense systems or by contributing to the costs of purchasing these systems. At the time, Zelensky estimated that Ukraine needed at least seven Patriot air defense systems or equivalent weapons to adequately protect the country from attacks.
