This Saturday’s train accident in the tunnel that connects the Atocha and Chamartín stations could have been a tragedy. Adif personnel derailed the drifting convoy so that it did not collide with another full of passengers. As ABC has learned, the train it was going to collide with was from Iryo.
The train covered the route Alicante – Chamartín and had a capacity for 460 passengers, typical of the ETR 1000 model with which the Italian company operates in Spain. According to an internal document to which this newspaper has had access, Adif control personnel ordered the Iryo train to turn back and it finished the journey 50 minutes late.
The drifting convoy traveled about four kilometers through the tunnel without anyone at the controls and two mechanics were inside. The train was broken down and was being towed to go to the workshop, but at some point both convoys separated.
When this occurred on the full slope, the damaged train went downhill. It is still unknown why the emergency brakes did not operate or why the convoy’s manual brake was not activated.
