With the news of the possible disaffiliation of Querétaro on everyone’s lips, here at 90min we remember several times where women’s teams have been harmed by institutional decisions unrelated to them. Incredible as it may seem, there have been several similar cases in the 5 years that our professional women’s soccer circuit has barely existed.
- When the Liga MX Femenil began, the promotion and relegation rules in Mexican soccer were still in force and these affected both the men’s teams and the women’s teams. That is, if a men’s team was relegated, the women’s team could not compete in the Liga MX Femenil since it automatically loses its right to the first division and in the women’s league there is no relegation. This is what happened when in 2018, Lobos BUAP lost the category and the women’s team had to disappear entirely.
The last years of Veracruz in the first division were a real ordeal for the entire institution, players and fans. Well, involved in big salary problems, very poor conditions, conflicts with the team president, Fidel Kuri and, obviously, negative results on the field, the Tiburones Rojos del Veracruz lost their place and were disaffiliated by the FMF in December 2019, disappearing the team in all its categories, including the women’s category, which also suffered from great shortcomings.
In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic and with the cancellation of the Clausura 2020 tournaments, the Monarcas Morelia team lived its last days as a professional soccer team, as the team’s transfer to Mazatlán was announced and therefore, the disappearance of the traditional Purépecha team as we knew it.
With this announcement and to the displeasure of the public, the Monarcas team became Mazatlán FC and with this. one of the most traditional teams in Mexican soccer was put to an end. Of course, this also involved the women’s team and many of the key players from Morelia who decided not to join Mazatlan left the fields while others ended up accommodated in other teams.
