We did not learn the lesson, neither as citizens nor as a government we understood that the third wave in our country was more than imminent. This has been talked about in the countries of Europe and Asia for months, it was more than logical for it to come to Mexico, but we minimized it again.
From tomorrow the State of Mexico returns to Amarillo, it was more than imminent since in Mexico City infections were on the rise for at least a month and a half. In fact, Governor Alfredo Del Mazo and the head of government of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, had made the decision to have the epidemiological traffic light together, something successful because mobility between both entities is high and constant. This time it was not like that and now we have to assume the consequences.
Hospital occupancy in constant increase, positive cases not to mention, have tripled in some entities, in others up to five times more, and especially the growth of the active part of the pandemic, all those positive people who have that potential of infect others. Everything had been warned by the press, based on daily statistics, but today it is still considered a “slight rebound”, in the words of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
For those who criticize that this arose after the June 6 elections, I believe that it had an influence, but it is not the main cause. I think the main cause is the delay in vaccination and the change in the epidemiological traffic light, that is, we lowered the rate of daily vaccination and the acceleration of economic and social activities was allowed at the same time.
As a reference are these statistics: 73 million 700 thousand vaccines have arrived in Mexico as reported by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, however, only 4 out of 10 people in our country have received at least one dose (that is, 37 million 307 thousand 725 with incomplete schedule) and only 2 out of 10 already have the two doses (21 million 396 thousand 576), a very low figure taking into account that the vaccination strategy began on December 24 of last year.
The State of Mexico was left without vaccination for three days and that is a lot for such a populated entity and, I insist, with an impressive social and labor dynamics and mobility. The issue was downplayed by the authorities, as was the arrival of the third wave, and today the consequences are beginning to be paid.
Today Mexico is almost defenseless against the new variants of coronavirus and with a society that little by little has been losing its fear of this pandemic. The figures that put Mexico among the first in the world with the most deaths in the world do not seem to matter much, today the main thing for everyone is beginning to be economic, I hope this does not exceed us as in December, January and February.
