The cycle of sceneAvilés that share the stages of the Niemeyer Center and the Palacio Valdés Theater will include seven national premieres in the first quarter of 2025, among which stands out ‘The two gentlemen of Verona’a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic with adaptation and dramaturgy of Declan Donnellan and Nick Omerod.
It will be next March 28 under the direction of Declan Donnellan and with a cast made up of Jorge Basanta, Prince Ezeanyim and Alberto Gómez Taboada, among others.
It is one of the first comedies that refines the tensions between friendship and love, in the version of a director considered among the world’s leading authorities on Shakespearean works, according to the organization of the series that was presented this Tuesday by the councilor of Culture, Yolanda Alonso, and the general director of the Niemeyer Center, Carlos Cuadros.
Also Shakespearean, it will come “The Comedy of Errors” in a version by the former Animalario Andrés Lima, and with Pepón Nieto as the protagonist.
The first premiere of 2025 will come from the hand of David Serrano, on January 31 and February 1, who will present, together with actors Nathalie Poza and Pablo Derqui, in the roles of Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski, the classic ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’by Tennessee Williams.
For its part, Magüi Mira will return to the Valdés Palace with ‘The music’by Marguerite Duras, with Ana Duato and Darío Grandinetti on the poster.
Lola Herrera and Natalia Dicenta, mother and daughter, will be directed by Claudio Tolcachir in ‘The road to Mecca’with apartheid as a background, on February 28 and March 2.
The first appointment at the Niemeyer Center Auditorium comes from the Hispano-Uruguayan Denise Despeyroux who writes, directs, and also interprets a text with autobiographical and metatheatrical overtones, almost symbiotic in his life story: “Mercy”with the playwright and director Pablo Messiez in the cast, among other performers.
Juan Diego Botto writes and Sergio Peris-Mencheta directs “14.4”an odyssey of emigration. Botto, two days later, voices the patriarch of American poetry alongside Nur Levi in “On the Leaves of Grass.” (Walt Whitman) It will be on March 21 and 23.
“Made in Asturias” and Off Niemeyer
Made in Asturias continues to support Asturian creation and, in addition to the aforementioned premiere by Sergio Gayol, it will feature two other performances at the Teatro Palacio Valdés. The return of
respected Teatro Estudio Gijón with one of its fetish authors, the Argentine Mauricio
Kartun in “From the canvas”. And a collective creation of Luz de Gas Teatro and Teatro del
Raven: “Juliet in Summer.”
The Club Room of the Niemeyer Center receives three functions in the Off. Reality theater or
verbatim on the Weinsten case in “The shit show”authored and directed by Elisabet
Altube. A classic of Spanish literature like “La celestina”, versioned and directed by
Darius Gallus. And science fiction and dystopia in “I am 451”, based on the work of Ray
Bradbury, directed by María Cárdenas and Xavo Giménez
