And last October, former player Olga Sharipova charged Zverev with physical and emotional abuse, allegations that the world number four German denied.
After more details of her allegations were published in August in Slate magazine, Zverev decided to issue a statement on Twitter about the matter, saying that he intended to take legal action against his ex-girlfriend, who alleged that one of the assaults she suffered was at the 2019 Shanghai Masters Tournament.
The German said at the time, “The court has seen the evidence we have presented. The accusations raised are defamatory and false. Accordingly, the lawyers have filed further proceedings against the source and the author. I categorically and firmly deny that I have offended Olya.”
Zverev also supported an idea by ATP to create an anti-domestic violence policy similar to that used in some team sports leagues.
“I fully support the creation of the ATP’s domestic violence policy,” he said, adding, “I will not address this issue further.”
But the German’s support for this policy did not prevent an investigation into the matter by ITP, which said in a statement on Monday, “An internal investigation is currently underway into allegations related to Alexander Zverev in an event that occurred during the 2019 Shanghai Masters.”
