Supported by neighbors and representatives of the tenant unions of Madrid and Cataloniathis Thursday was presented in The Corridor, Oviedo/Uvieuhe Asturies Tenants Union. The setting chosen was not coincidental: the ground floor of a subsidized housing building managed by the company Arboleya Visoren Norte. The real estate company, specialized in the management of blocks built on public land, has accumulated repeated complaints from its tenants for years.
The Union denounces that public-private collaboration, the transfer of public land to private developers to develop protected housing blocks, leads to this type of abuse, and they point to the ultimate responsibility of the Principalitywhich, according to Andres Brosshould be controlling this type of situation: “There is only one worker to maintain 300 homes.”
Another of the main neighborhood complaints is the imposition of abusive prices for hot water and heating by Sermavia company from the same business group as Arboleya Visoren Norte.
The Union aims to be a collective tool for tenants to defend themselves against abuses by landlords, as well as an organization to fight for compliance with the right to housing. “Membership will open soon,” explains Bros, who points out that the Union is a plural and autonomous organization, open to all people who live in rent.
Regarding upcoming mobilizations, the Union points out that their priority now is to “work patiently” extending the organization block by block, but that they will support the calls that arise.
