The tenant unions have not attended the meeting called by the Government in Moncloa this Tuesday, since they refuse to share a table with the real estate employerwho is held responsible for the increase in rental prices. In a statement, they have made it clear that they will not participate in a photo with those they consider to be the culprits of the housing crisis.
“Tobacco companies are not invited to design the National Strategy against cancer and rentiers are not invited to discuss housing policy,” stressed the Madrid Tenants Union. Representatives of the movement the right to housing They assure that they do not expect solutions from the real estate employers and demand that the President of the Government, Pedro Sancheztake a clear position.
Specifically, they urge him to confront the owners who prices have risen uncontrollably or, otherwise, they indicate that the Government will continue with policies that only offer superficial changes. “They continue to turn a deaf ear to the message of the people who are drowning because of real estate speculation,” they lamented.
Unions have criticized that measures such as the youth bonus and the decree on seasonal rentals will not solve the problem. They consider that the bonus will only benefit landlords and that the decree is insufficient because it is a simple informative record with no real impact.
“The current situation is extreme and does not allow family photos,” they have stressed, as evidenced by the recent massive demonstrations of tenants in several cities in Spain. The social agents consider that the Government has two options: or “stands up to unpunished rentiers” or “he continues to give them free rein.”
After the demonstration on October 13 in Madrid demanding a reduction in rents and the call for a strike to not pay rents, the union has insisted on asking the resignation of Isabel Rodríguezwho they accuse of never wanting to meet with them but meeting with the construction companies and real estate portals multiple times.
Among their demands, they also demand a 50% reduction in rents, the conversion of empty and tourist homes into residential homes, the elimination of squatter groups and the end of speculative activities in the real estate market.
The union warns that the lack of political ambition in this matter could lead to a rent strike: “Either prices go down, or we are going to stop paying them“. In the absence of satisfactory responses, the tenant unions have announced new protests in November, which will take place in Malaga and Seville on November 9 and in Barcelona on November 23. Their objective is to continue putting pressure on the Government for a change in housing policies.
