In the first weekend of screening the takings of Joker: Folie à Deux are in line with the first filmbut critics have generally panned the sequel directed by Todd Phillips and it is unlikely to experience exponential growth as happened in 2019.
Specifically, Folie à Deux opened internationally with 121 million dollars against 139 for the original Joker, but the latter won a Golden Lion in Venice and then two Oscars, which allowed the film to eventually exceed one billion dollars in takings.
Considering the current 33% on Rotten Tomatoesit’s really unlikely that the second film will be able to aspire to the same accolades and enjoy that kind of promotional push, so much so that Phillips has already thrown up his hands regarding his future involvement with the DC universe.
The current situation
Going into the details of the different markets, Joker: Folie à Deux, which was presented from the beginning as a musical, reached the top 5 basically everywhere, taking first place at the box office in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Mexico and in France.
In the UK the film starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga grossed practically on par with Venom 2 and slightly higher than Dune and Empire of the Planet of the Apes. In Italy, as often happens with films presented in Venice, Joker: Folie à Deux dominated with 73% of tickets.
The problem, as mentioned, is that unlike the original Joker there will probably not be any important prizes to push the results of the film, which therefore could see a drop in takings in the coming weeks.
