Battle for Kyiv continues – pictures show many destroyed Russian military vehicles
+++ 3.45 p.m.: For the fifth day in a row, no major Ukrainian city has fallen to troops from Russia. Apparently, Ukrainian resistance is greater than Vladimir Putin suspected. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said that 5,300 Russian soldiers have been killed so far. In addition, 29 planes and helicopters and 191 tanks from Russia were destroyed.
The Ministry’s figures cannot be independently verified. However, videos and images posted on social media show a large number of suspected Russian military assets being destroyed. A reporter from the US news channel CNN reported on a large military column from Russia, which is said to have been completely destroyed on the way to Kyiv.
Russia concedes losses in Ukraine war – battle for Kyiv continues
Russia recently admitted that its own soldiers were killed in the invasion. “Russian soldiers are showing bravery and heroism in carrying out the special operation,” a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Sunday (February 27, 2022). “Unfortunately, there are dead and injured among our comrades.” He did not give specific figures.
According to Ukrainian media reports, Kyiv has withstood attacks from several directions in the outskirts, although there are repeated waves of attacks on the capital. Street fighting is also continuing in the second largest Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, which is only around 40 kilometers from mainland Russia. On Monday (February 28th, 2022), Russia apparently carried out several violent airstrikes on a residential area. There are said to be hundreds injured and dozens dead.
Kyiv prepares for guerrilla war against Russia – prisoners released
Update from Monday, February 28th, 2022, 12:41 p.m.: In order to receive support in the war against Russia, Kyiv is now taking a special step. Prisoners with combat experience should be released, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It was “morally a difficult decision, but it is necessary,” said the President of Ukraine. The people released are said to be used primarily to defend the hard-fought cities of Kharkiv and Kyiv.
First report: Kyiv – The resistance of the Ukrainian army against the troops from Russia continues. Kyiv remains hard fought. According to an army spokesman for Ukraine, the situation in the country’s capital is currently under control. “All Russian attempts to occupy the city have failed,” according to a statement that Ukraine published on Facebook, among other places.
But the situation in Kyiv, like in the rest of Ukraine, remains tense. Kiev’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko even said at the weekend that the metropolis was now completely surrounded by Russian troops. His press spokeswoman contradicted this shortly afterwards. There is still the possibility to supply the city. Nonetheless, according to Klitschko, a “catastrophe” threatens in Kyiv if medicines and food become scarce due to the siege by Russia.
Ukraine: Kyiv prepares for guerrilla warfare against Russia
Meanwhile, the population of the Ukrainian capital appears to be preparing for a long guerrilla struggle against the Russian army. Several pictures from Kyiv show people preparing hundreds of Molotov cocktails. A recipe for self-production of incendiary bombs was distributed by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. A brewery in Lviv, a city deep in western Ukraine, says it has switched production. Instead of beer, Molotov cocktails are now being bottled in the factories. The label on the bottles has also been changed and now shows Russian President Vladimir Putin sitting naked on a throne.
In Kyiv itself, part of everyday life goes on despite the war between Ukraine and Russia. According to the authorities, the grocery stores should reopen today. Local public transport is also set to resume operations in the city.
Ukraine: Opposition politician flees Kyiv
Volodymyr Zelenskyj is still in Kyiv. Ukraine’s president has refused to leave the country’s hard-fought capital, and in part as a result has become the face of the resistance against Russia. Like Mayor Klitschko, Selenskyj is combative.

Unlike Zelenskyy, on the other hand, Viktor Medvedchuk probably left Kyiv. The opposition politician is the head of the pro-Kremlin party “Opposition Platform – for Life”. He is considered a close ally of Vladimir Putin. Medvedchuk lives in Kyiv and has been under house arrest since the beginning of the war between Ukraine and Russia. He had previously been charged with treason and financing terrorism. He is now on his way out of the capital, his lawyer said, according to the Kyiv Independent. (dil)
